Water filtration
Does anyone have any views on the necessity of filtering the cold water supply ? I have not done this previously, but as I am in the process of building a darkroom, this would be a good time to do it if there are definite benefits.

I have never felt the need to filter the main feed into my darkroom/s but I do filter all tap water and solutions used for film development.

depends on the quality of your water supply. Have you noticed problems caused by water supply?
Generally my water supply is fine but to be safe I use bought distilled/deionised water for some stock solutions and occasionally use distilled/dionised for final film rinse. Having said that a filtration system is cheap to buy. The filters aren't so cheap to replace but if you put a bypass system in so you can switch in or out then you can just use it when required. i.e. when you want pure water for stock or rinse purposes. Bypass also facilitates changing of filters. http://www.coleparmer.com/catalog/pr...sp?sku=0150320

I do as Neil does and filter water through a Brita filter for general chemical mixing, and I also use distilled water for mixing film developer. The sort of set-up described here by percepts would be a good investment.

I also started to filter water for chemical mixing through a Brita Filter, the water in my area is very good but it's better to be safe than sorry.

For general use, film washing, etc., I use a Paterson tap filter to filter out any small particles that may have found their way into the system.
For making up stock solutions and the occasional working solution, I use a Brita or deionised water.

I should probably add that I also use distilled/deionized water for mixing up developers.

A friend of mine boils, and then bottles the boiled water believing that the boiling removes, or reduces the free oxygen content in the water. Perhaps those more knowledgeable than I would care to comment about such a practice.

I have heard about that method as well but have never used it myself.

I take no special messures when mixing up or washing and have never had any trouble. The only thing I do from time time is filter particles from the water supplie with the sort of fliter Trevor has mentioned.
With the new darkroom I may add a drop filter to the water feed.
