Default Multigrade 400H

I was browsing for De Vere 504 enlargers and noticed this one on the Second-Hand Darkroom site.
How does the 400H differ from the 500H?

I don't know but Nova has a 504 (not Mk5) with an MG500 system for sale currently, and Ffordes has the MG500 kit as a unit, separate from an enlarger.

Keith,

I have only used the 500H but having looked at the 400H manual -

http://www.ilfordphoto.com/Webfiles/...1051541969.pdf

the 400 seems to do much the same.

I did notice the 400 controller has switches and knobs to control things whereas the 500 controller is all press keypad control.
I should imagine the 500 head was a development from the 400 version.

Just noticed from the manual that the 400 gives 0-4 grades and the 500 gives 0 - 5 grades.

Neil.

Off the top of my head without checking, I think the 400 head was for the old Multigrade paper, not the Multigrade IV paper, what this means in terms of grades and contrast I'm not sure, but you would have to check.

The MG500 was in fact designed for Multigrade II so it may well be that the older 400 was for the original Ilfospeed Multigrade. I notice from the manual that the 400 used yellow and magenta filters rather than green and blue. AS MG500 spares are getting hard to come by I imagine the situation with the less common 400 might well be worse.

Richard,

What spares for the MG500 system should I be aware of? - considering I'm using one of your control units.

It's mostly the control unit that's the problem I think as the chips are no longer available. I believe the power supply can be repaired as long as the transformer hasn't blown.

Although I'm on a restricted budget, I will avoid one with the 400H, as I would want better control over contrast filters.
Thanks for explaining this.
I think the ideal 504 for me would be a bench top condenser (Varicon?) version with a filter drawer, provided it has the correct condensers for 5x4 with the lensboard and negative carrier. I would then buy a set of the latest Ilford Multigrade filters.

Thanks to all who replied.
