I have left films in my Patterson tanks for a day waiting to be developed without any problems, I say 100% lightproof

If I have a batch of film to process then I load a number of tanks at once. If they are a number of different makes, in the case 120 I use the exposed sticker to mark the tank so I don't mix the dev time up.

The correct answer is quite critical. I can take a chance and run it through camera with possibly disastrous results or load a section into a reel and develop to see if there is anything there. I'll waste a bit of film this way but I cannot now think of any other way of being sure

If you figure this out please let us know. The suspense is killing.

Haha, I did something similar last weekend. Borrowed the spiral from a Paterson 35mm tank, expanded it for 120 film in a larger tank but forgot to exchange the black core for the longer one. It took me a day to work out why the last three frames were somewhat fogged! Surprisingly I still managed to get usable scans from them though.

They ARE lightproof but NOT leakproof (Well not the ones I have anyway!) Jobo are much better as are most stainless tanks.

I no longer store paterson tanks with there lids on. In my experience this helps against leaks.

I do the same Martin as it stops the soft lip from permanently stretching.

Martin - are you referring to the red or grey soft plastic cap - rather than the screw on lid ?

Sorry, the "black soft plastic" one's that fit onto the standard paterson film tanks. In my view, they tend to loose their snap if left on the tanks during storage.
My film tanks are kept in a cupboard so I store the lids separately to the tanks themselves.
When in use and the air is expelled, I have greater confidence that the lids will stay on and the fluid inside, especially when using a rotary motor base.

I use my tank for 5x4 in the kitchen, in bright sunlight. Loading it in a bag obvs. Never had an issue. And we sell tanks to end users who do not have darkrooms but scan their negs and again, never heard of anyone complaining.
