Going a bit off subject,
can anyone tell me the origin of the size 6 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches for photography papers? I looked at Wiki. and there are loads of sizes most people would never have head of, but not this size. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paper_...tography_sizes It is still produced today, but not in such a big range as years ago. For me it is the ideal size for domestic use. It isn't over powering sitting in an album or framed on a sideboard. Definitely my favourite size. Cheers. p.s. The link takes you to halfway down the page. Scroll back up for the full Wiki. page.

Thanks for all that guys. I did a quick sum of the area and price difference in my head, so it may not be bang-on accurate, but it still seemed disproportionate at first glance. (Gets calculator out!) My 7x6 MF negs fit a 8x10 almost perfectly, but the 35mm are always a trade off between size or cropping the 2 short sides. Same with 14x11 too, MF negs a good fit, 35mm large long side borders.x

FWIW, Ilford's largest market by far is the USA. If you try to talk to most people in the USA about something that is A4 sized, they won't know what you are talking about.
8x10 is most likely the most popular and largest selling size by far, and the slightly lower cost per square inch/cm reflects that. I would love to have good access to 12"x16" paper. It isn't normally imported by the Canadian distributor, and it is rarely found in the USA. |

Isn,t 11x14 popular in th USA? It seems it is only made this size by Ilford.

It may be that the U.S. darkroom printers are somewhat conservative as I think that most U.K. one are but I'd have thought that as A4 tends to be the standard size for printers that it would have grown in popularity but as I said we are a very conservative group and change tends to be slow Mike |
