Deep tank paper processor/ slot thing
Has anyone noticed a slight change in tonal range of there paper using developer in a deep tank. I've noticed it in the blacks not being as black if that make sense over a period of time.

Been using a slotty thing for as long as the have been out and I can't say I have ever had a problem with my blacks, or anything else for that matter ;-)

It raises the question of what is different. The only thing I can think of is that when tray developing the dev is always fresh as it can't be kept. In a slotty thing it can be kept and may be kept beyond its ideal use-by date.
Could this be the reason? I do know that I have kept and used dev in the slotty thing too long and the change can be very subtle over a very long time such that it doesn't show up on immediate inspection but would and does when compared with a print in brand new dev. If you have been printing for "donkeys" then these are things that you probably spot as second nature but if like me you've only been at it a relatively short time( about 5 years) and not at high volume then the sixth sense hasn't developed enough - well not in my case it hasn't. Print development should be done in trays. Honest. |

I think you will find that the surface area exposerd to air at the top of a slotty thing (remembering they also have floating lids) is a lot less than that of an open 12x16 tray :-) Also it has been said before about the importance of using the correct developer used in a slotty thing, one should use Nova's own, or find one that has good keeping qualities. I standardised on Neutol several years ago for this very reason.

Interestingly I find that Neutol in a slotty thing after it has just passed its freshness gives me exactly what I am looking for.Once it has matured a tad it is like experiencing a fine wine :-) Mind, I draw the line at using it to exhaustion and always check ALL the chemicals before use.
