Old Toner
I thought that the print that I’m working on today, which I’m making on Formatone WT Classic paper, could benefit from a slight cooling in tone. I was about to mix some of Peter Hogan’s “Blu-blak” redeveloper to use when I saw, covered in dust at the back of the shelf, two bottles labelled as that product. Unfortunately they were also labelled 11/12/2006, the mixing date; presumable this also accounted for the dust on the bottles! Following the old adage, waste not want not, I wiped off the dust and tried the contents out on a test print and was more than a little surprised to find that it worked and achieved the desired effect. So that's a few pennies saved.

I always try and ignore expiry dates on chemicals unless I'm developing film. I've found many chemicals last well beyond the dates quoted and usually go by colour to indicate their condition. Some stand out examples are Fotospeed LD20 lith and Agfa Viradon which seem to go on forever regardless of how badly they are stored.
I'm not even going to mention the most famous one . . . .R*****L Steve |

I agree Steve, however as a follow up I've just come out of the darkroom where I had used the chemical again only to find that it died on me half way through the redevelopment. Interesting effect but not quite what I wanted. Must pay more attention to the instructions next time.

Bad luck and a pity, Dave. It is always nice to find stuff that lasts nearly forever but unfortunately it is not always to be.

I've just finished off a bottle of Rodinal I opened nearly 10 years ago. I initially tested it on a bit of unimportant film and it's fine so I've just developed some of the films from the FADU weekend in Yorkshire and they look good!

I've kept mixed Sepia toner for around 18 months between using it,(it was at the back of my chemical cuboard ),and I am a typical Jerseyman, we try never to waste anything, but 5 years ?, that would be a lot even for me,
Richard

With Rodinal I would only worry if I had to use a spoon to dig it out of it's bottle.
