You might already be aware of this site, but it is a good resource for pinhole.

Sorry to have misled you, Ian, about the supply of Direct Positive paper. If you wanted to make contact or enlarged copies the FB paper can be made translucent with oil (which is messy) or I have read that candle wax works when ironed on.

If I have read it right it can also be loaded into the film holders under a red safe light, maybe making that a bit easier

I've loads to learn, but reckon it might be fun, mixing both construction and photography.

I have some old Ilford Direct Positive 5x4 paper and it was cut to be the correct size for Darkslides - ie the same size as sheets of 5x4 film.

It will save a lot as hassle if you can find the correctly cut 5x4 paper - trimming millimetres off sheets of paper isn't much fun.

The early batches of the Ilford Direct Positive paper was slightly too large for standard film holders. I think it was actually 4x5 inches, which is too big. They corrected that, however, and supplies should now match the holders. I bought some, perhaps 3 years ago, and it certainly went straight in without trimming.

Hi All.

Many thanks for all the replies, much appreciated.

Well I've decided to go ahead with the project in 5x4, just purchased a couple of bits and bobs (tripod mount and the "hole") just need to pick up a 5x4 dark slide and some positive paper.

Fingers crossed my simple DIY tools and skills will produce a decent result.

Will let you all know how it goes

Ian

Ian, if you've not used Ilford's positive paper before, it's worth reading their page about it, as it explains about pre-flashing of the paper etc. which may or not be helpful, depending on the final look you are after.

Either way, it's worth the read, as this paper is somewhat more expensive than 'normal' darkroom paper, if I remember correctly, from when I bought mine.

As promised, here's a little update on my progress.

Have sorted out the main box and once the "hole" arrives in the mail it is ready to assemble.

Have used some MDF that I had lying around but had to double up to get the correct thickness. Have fitted felt light traps to the area where the DDS is to go, as this seemed sensible and made the DDS a snug fit.

Just got to do a bit of filling, a bit of tidying up, figure out the exterior finish, my MDF is not waterproof, and buy the paper.
