Default hello from the Gold Coast, Australia

Hi my name is Matthew. I live in the Gold Coast of Queensland, Australia. I am originally from Sydney.
I've been using film cameras since I was 10 years old. I started using darkrooms when I was 17 year old. I worked in an advertising agency a young man as a darkroom assistant with some work in the studio. I have used other peoples' darkrooms over the years. Now we are building our own small home and will set up a dedicated darkroom. It will be a room 3m x 3m in size. I plan to have a dry bench for enlargers, and a wet bench for film and paper dev. The temps here in Australia can be very hot so ventilation and air conditioning are almost always necessary. We hope to have our home completed in 6 months, so that will be October, 2019. I am here to learn from others. This will be my planning and research into setting up my new darkroom properly and efficiently. Thanks in advance for allowing me to join this forum and I hope to enjoy the time spent here.

Welcome to the forum Matthew.

Sounds like you are in the ideal situation as far as darkrooms go - 9 sq meters all to yourself to design!

Given that Australia appears to be situated approximately 3 miles from the surface of the Sun, I can imagine that keeping things cool can be a major problem - not one I have often here in the UK...

Any queries, ask away - I'm sure all will be happy to make suggestions .

Cheers, and have fun!

Hi Matthew and welcome to fadu. I hope you will consider taking part in the print exchanges when you're up and running. In the meantime, best of luck with the build.

Welcome from around 350 hours walk south of you. I can empathise with the temperature issue having just patiently outwaited Summer to get some reasonable darkroom weather. I don't have any form of climate control in my house (no air-conditioning and not considering it an overly bright idea to use the open fireplace in the darkroom) so, being in Victoria, every other day I have to worry about it being too cold when, the other week, it was 32° at 2a.m.

My darkroom is a spare bedroom in a rental property so I'm well practiced at working around obstacles if you need any ideas. Having your own home with a dedicated space, however, sounds as though you're well ahead of the game! Enjoy it - it's the best thing in the world to be able to simply close a door, pour some chemicals and start printing whenever the mood takes you.

Kindly,
Molli

Welcome Matthew. Just a pity that we are about 10 hours apart

If you have any problems with film development I think we can all rule out too low a temperature as one of the causes
