Default Store security devices: (X-rays?)

I wonder if anyone knows what these devices do, other than to catch old ladies nicking bottles of gin in the supermarket!

Do they emit some form of X-ray and how much of a bearing this has on cameras loaded with film?

Imagine the scenario of a day tripping family group visiting Cambridge here and after stocking up with pies, sandwiches and drinks from the local Sainsburys, it turns wet for the rest of the day. Mum sees this as a good opportunity for a bit of retail therapy. All the big names are here and after a dozen or more different shops, what about the film in the cameras? Will it be any good? Or, perhaps the wife and I taking a camera with us on our frequent trips into town as all the stores have them now. I do mean multiple exposure to these devices.

Perhaps someone may mention about radiation levels used, if so, I should mention that library books from our local library have the habit of setting these alarms off, so too do indoor hi-fi aerials.

No risk of x-ray damage to films.. I'm in the habit of collecting RFID tags and keeping them in my wallet just to see if anyone will chase me

No takers to date, despite several years of trying

As far as I know they do not use X-Rays, they use Radio Frequencies. If they used X-Rays they would have to have someone monitoring a screen, as at airports. Shops cannot afford to have at least one person tied up all day just looking a screen, in particular the smaller shops.

If they used xrays we'd all be sterile by now.

Thanks for the answers, I will now go out more with a camera.

paulc: Try the indoor loop hi fi aerial, it works a treat here. If you are in to wind ups, place it in someone you don't likes basket on wheels!
