Default Bert Hardy

I actually met Bert Hardy when I was living in Sussex. I had approached him to give a talk at my camera club in I think 1989. I went to his house and had a lovely talk with him, but he regretted that he would be unable to help due to his failing health. One of life's natural gentlemen.

A nice set of pictures. I was able to get hold of a Bert Hardy books some years ago. I think it must have been from the library and his street photography of the Gorbals was particularly poignant.

He is the man who later shot the "You're never alone with a Strand" series of advertisements for that homely and cosy habit of smoking as it was portrayed in the 50s and fully endorsed by all except a few strange people who felt that smoke in the lungs might not have been such a good idea.

Thanks for posting. One of my favourite photographers, but sadly overlooked today. Some of his pictures could be trite, but his best work is as good as the very best.

The 1975 book 'Bert Hardy' printed by Gordon Fraser, is well worth seeking out.

Not many people remember Bert set up a darkroom, Grove Hardy, in the 1950's. Gerry Grove, the printer he set it up with died in the 1970's, but it carried on & Bert ran it until he died in 1995. After that his widow Sheila carried it on & retitled it 'The Bert Hardy Darkroom'. But it closed in 2007. I took some pictures just before it was cleared & redeveloped, on the Darkside site;

As a teaser for a new exhibition at The Photographers' Gallery, here's a previously unpublished photo from 1942.

And here's a link to the exhibition details.
