Durst M370 BW utterly stupid question!!!!
Just bought above (first ever) enlarger on eBay - comes with a timer which switches on the bulb when you turn the dial to set seconds and press red button - does anyone know if there is another way in which light bulb is switched on - timer is only a 60 second timer - surely in the process of setting everything up you might need light on longer than 60 seconds - I know I might be being dumb but the instructions from Durst are not brilliantly written - ta very much

There is usually a "white light" switch which bypasses the timer and switches it on until you turn it off again.
If you know the make and model of the timer, let us know and someone here may have the same one. |

As Bob said, knowing the timer model might help someone to give you a more aimed advice. That said you can just plug the enlarger directly to the socket or via an extension cord provided with a switch. The M370BW is electrically very simple, just a bulb socket with a power cord ...
And, by the way, welcome aboard! Cheers, M. |

Welcome to FADU. I have a Durst 605 and while it is not the same machine, I never need anything like 60 secs for a print. Unless you were to do a very large print, say more than 12 x16 inches I'd be surprised if 60 secs isn't more than enough. Don't forget that the lens has several f stops so there is a degree of leeway in terms of the right exposure. Try printing at say f11 initially and if this gives print exposure times close to 60 secs then drop to f8 or even f5.6
Let us know how the exposures go. If 60 secs isn't enough we'll put our collective FADU heads together and try and work out a solution Mike |

If the timer is a black Durst Tim 60 you lift the button up to switch on without timer counting down. If its another model, let us have details. Alex

Thank you thank you!
I sussed it out thanks - I'm flippin gormless and had to seriously laugh at my stupidity - to do all your focussing etc - you lift red switch up (with timer dial turned to nought) - at the point of a timed exposure you drop red switch down - absolutely simple - but not if the Durst instructions are anything to go by
Cheers peeps Monica |

Wow- first ever enlarger! How wonderful. I made my first print in the school darkroom in 1976. It was the old days. Spuddykins, do you have someone to guide you through the process of learning to print, or are you winging it from Internet articles??
Ask anything you want here, because I doubt you'll find more willing guides, and more useful information anywhere. Maybe you've already printed somewhere else- a club, a college, whatever. If not, take advantage of the wisdom here. Good luck. |

Monica, if this is your first entry to darkroom printing or even if you have already done some in a college darkroom I'd recommend a book by Tim Rudman called: The Photographer's Master Printing Course.
It will take you all the way from beginner to expert in one book. It is always worth reading such books. Once started you are in a much better position to ask the right questions and make sense of our answers more easily Best of luck with all your endeavours Mike |
