Default Hello from Cornwall

Hi All

I am just getting back into photography 28 years after taking a course and college. I started thinking about film photography again in the new year when sorting out some boxes and I found my Grandad's old Cosina camera from the 70's. After that I found an alternative & traditional processes short course at a local college. So I searched online to buy the same type of cameras I used to use which were the Olympus OM range and was pleasantly surprised to see how affordable 35mm SLR cameras and lenses are now.

After getting a few cameras and old books to brush up on my knowledge I then got all the stuff I needed to process my own BW films. So I started doing that just before starting my course and haven't stopped. The course was great and really got me back into the swing of things. I am currently setting up a temporary darkroom in my room space which will be big enough for an enlarger and developing trays while I was the prints downstairs. Eventually I want to setup a darkroom at one end of my workshop but that will be a much bigger job.

Still very much an amateur but will continue learning as a go. I am going to go along to one of my local camera club meets but I think they are all digital so will have to see how I go.

Anyway enough of my waffling I am looking for to learning from this site.

Hi there and welcome aboard!

Camera clubs do seem to be pretty much all digital now, and often seem to have little time for traditional workers, but it is worth having a look-see - you could be lucky - especially if you do digital as well, as many do. Having long-ago taken Groucho's views on clubs very much to heart, I have not really explored that side of things myself

Cornwall is a great place to find yourself if you are interested in photographing the landsacpe - I seriously need to get back down there for a long weekend or two (once it cools down a bit).

Have fun! Bob.

Welcome to FADU. I am amazed and heartened that you found an alternative and traditional processes course at your local college. The nearest trad course in my area even as far back as 2003 when there was still some analogue photography left, was at Leamington Spa some 17 miles away and it was only a basic trad B&W course and certainly not alternative processes.

If I may ask, where was this course and what did it consist of?

Thanks

Mike

Hi Mike

The course schedule was as follows

Week 1 - Photography principles. Introduction to darkroom and photograms/paper negatives

Week 2 - How to process film and make a contact sheet

Week 3 - Printing Skills - Dodging burning and filters

Week4 - Cyanotypes

Week 5 - Large Format

Week 6 - Pinhole

Week 7 -Lith Printing and toners

Week 8 - Liquid emulsion

Week 9 - Finishing and Presentation

Week 10 - Review

The course and the tutor was very flexible so many of use wanted to just use the darkroom instead of certain subjects and that was fine. It appears most of the collages down here have darkrooms and it forms a part of the A level etc courses they do.

Thanks
Dave

Hi Bob

Yes landscapes are my favourite so I am very lucky with where I am, just need the time with two young kids. I very much get your point on clubs but I will pop along and see what this one is like but won't get my hopes up

Thanks
Dave
