I use a Staticmaster brush, the one with the radioactive Polonium 210 alpha particle emitter strip. The radioactive strip has a limited half-life so a replacement once a year is recommended. The brush works pretty well even after the radioactivity has faded.

Anti Static. Zerostat.
If anyone does have a Zerostat Anti Static Gun they might like to try this.
Attach a neon bulb from an old broken electric kettle or extension cable to the pin in the nozzle of the gun. When you squeeze the trigger the bulb glows. It gives you confirmation that something is actually happening with the thing. WARNING.....Do not touch the loose wire when squeezing the trigger as it gives out a nifty electric shock. It sure does wake you up. Sorry that I cannot show a picture of the bulb glowing as it is a bit of a juggle working the Zerostat and camera at the the same time in the dark. All you have to do to connect the wire is wrap it around a needle, slide off and then push the wire spiral you have just made over the spike in the nozzle of the gun. Bend the loose wire away from you. Keep your fingers clear of the loose wire when pulling the trigger. Obviously when you have checked the gun works, remove the neon bulb when you actually used the gun on negatives. The photos are self explanatory. Cheers. http://www.film-and-darkroom-user.or...1&d=1637832787 http://www.film-and-darkroom-user.or...1&d=1637832787 http://www.film-and-darkroom-user.or...1&d=1637832787 http://www.film-and-darkroom-user.or...1&d=1637832787

Dust Particles
I don't actually have a serious problem with dust or hairs on negatives, but what I do before printing, the negative goes into the glassless carrier and two quick swipes of a 1" brush (unused) to loosen any particles that are really fixed to the film then a few vigorous blasts from a grenade shaped blower usually does the job.
The trick is of course not to get the dust on there in the 1st place. When I have finished developing a film it gets hung up to dry on the door lintel between the kitchen and utility room and left to dry naturally. There is always a gentle draft and a film will usually dry in less than an hour. It always then goes into a negative sheet and indexed. Whether I am lucky or not I don't know but where I live now I am not bothered with serious dust or hard water stains. When I was in the forces in Germany, (1976-80) Tetenal used to sell a quick drying solution that was claimed to have anti static properties as well. I used it a few times, but the result was a bit indifferent. I just became very proficient with a spotting brush! |

The best anti static device is an earth lead. just touch the negatives to it and the dust drops off the same with glass etc. none of this is any good unless you earth yourself to clear the static from your body

I use a blower and a anti static cloth as well as a Pro-cd statbrush ,But what I also do before a printing session is to give my enlarger and the area a wipe down with Elimistat a general purpose anti static spray .
