Default Gold chloride

Tetenal gold toner cost about £70 a litre. Has anyone made their own gold toner? I have some scrap gold in the form of single earings (belonging to my wife) she won't miss them honest?

Yes I've always made my own Gold toners. It helps that I worked in the precious metal industry for a few years, some of that time as a Gold refiner, usually a few kilos of fine gold a day.

I still have some fine gold and also some ampules of Gold Chloride - they aren't for sale

Is it a simple process or would it be easier to weigh my gold in for cash and buy some gold toner.

It's not difficult but it's very hazardous and the fumes given off are very corrosive. You need a fume cupboard and some lab equipment it's not practical on a small scale.
