For me something like Contax NX, small, high tech: http://www.leicashop.com/media/catal.../2/12908_2.jpg
plenty of mechanical wonders readily available s/h. |

I'd like to see something like the Olympus OM1n. Totally mechanical (except the meter) small, light, reliable. Awesome range of amazing lenses. What's not to like?

But, I suppose if it ever happens, it'll be the case of who's got the tooling still available for a Vietnamese or Bangladeshi entrepenneur.

Small and Light
Agreed, but as I have large hands that sort of swamps the camera and makes it a bit of a fiddle. As I said something along the lines of a new(er) version of the Nikon F6 but lighter.

I don't think anyone's going to design and build a new SLR. Rather it'll be the case of the tooling for a defunct model being resurrected and built with cheap labour.

Ironically enough, if the changes were not that far reaching and expensive then a "new" F6 which is still in production may be the best we can hope for, as suggested by John King Mike |

Hard to believe this. There are no defunct models at present or near future that can be easily resurrectred. F6 an FM10 are still in production, both made in Japan. There are rumors Nikon is preparing something new in a couple of years. Bessaflex and EOS 1V have been recently discontinued, hard to imagine someone resurrects these cameras. Remember that most film cameras still in production are coming from either Germany (Leica, Linhof,..) or Japan, the exception being some LF cameras from China, so I don't think it's a matter of cheap labour at all..

New Cameras.
I think we will have to take stock and accept that in all probability there will be no new cameras of the likes similar to the Canon A1, Nikon FE2, Olympus OM1/2n. Apart from the logistics of getting all the tooling and marketing up to a point where it will be financially viable, is there actually a demand for them now.
Used 35mm and to a point medium format equipment at the moment is very affordable and readily available. I keep looking for the odd 'special' lens which I could use but these are getting harder to find (MInolta 20/2.8MD for instance). The same will inevitably happen with cameras of all makes. Are ex-film camera users just sitting on them not knowing that there is a decent market out there? There must be thousands of older classic models just sitting in drawers and cupboards, still usable but forgotten. I have just 4 cameras now 2 Nikon's (F6 & F601) and 2 Minoltas (XE1 and a 101b) and they will probably see me out, but should a well cared for Nikon F2a appear I may just be tempted.......... |
