NY Times article from 1948
I'm reading a book titled, "The moment of seeing". And in it, there's an article from the NY Times, 1948 with the heading, "Contrast in Schools", "Examples of Two Ways of Teaching Photography".
I thought I'd share it and I'd be curious to hear anyone's views on it.

How do I expand it enough to read it, Marty? I tried my zoom setting and even at 150% it still wasn't legible
Thanks Mike |

The best option is probably to download the image (usually via the pop-up menu you get with a right-click on your mouse) and view it in your computer's image software - you can enlarge it there. It is readable that way. [Edit: Another, quicker, option is to click on the snapshot to open the image and then do a right-click on the image and select View Image (or similar) this should open the image in the tab by itself and you should then be able to zoom that tab. You then need to hit the Back button to return to the forum. This works with Firefox - other browsers may differ in their behaviour... Last edited by Bob; 15th January 2021 at 05:52 PM. |

I think the article needs to be split into about 4 sections and a close up with the camera on a tripod is needed to get the type to a size where we can read it.

Sorry guys. Firstly the book image is of poor quality and secondly... I'm not really very good at all of the techy stuff.
I've tried an online jpg to pdf converter. Hopefully it will help.

That works fine now Marty. Interesting article. I am not sure I have ever really visualised a scene on my head before taking the picture and I fear but don't know this to be the case for sure is that I feel I might have learned my at the Non AA school which is a learning by doing and discovery. Certainly I am convinced that the learning by doing approach works best with kids up to quite a senior age group in schools but it requires a bigger investment in teacher time and materials and this cost than the close to 100% theory approach. However the practical approach if I can call it that has a better chance in the longer run of giving the student deeper insights and ultimately anchoring the subject in the student's brain

I’m leaning towards the more formal, theoretical approach given at the California school of fine arts. I would have loved to have learned the technical stuff such as the zone system directly from AA himself. And the more creative aspects from Minor White. I think I would also have preferred the climate and subject matter of the West Coast.

Your original file worked fine for me, Marty. Click the thumbnail, click again on the resulting image and, when the "cross in a circle" magnification icon appears, click on that.
That's the way I normally look at such uploads. |
