Default Elliott Erwitt exhibition in Venice

I'm not long back from a Venice holiday. First thing I noticed when I got off the waterbus from the airport was a bunch of posters advertising an Elliott Erwitt "Personal Best" exhibition.

He's always been one of my favourite photographers - I bought the "Personal Best" book some time ago, but I thought it would be good to see the prints in the "raw".

I wasn't disappointed - they were superb. Spread over 3 floors and printed 3 feet by 2 feet, every one was a treat. I don't know who prints his stuff, but I could learn a few things from him! Plenty of space to stand back and admire or to get in close and check the details.

It will be closed by now, but it was a reminder that seeing a "real" print is far better than even the best reproduction in a book.

At the image size you mentioned, I suspect that they are possibly inkjet prints.

I could be wrong.

I must admit, Keith, I'm not sure if I could tell the difference. They were also framed and behind glass, so it would very difficult to tell.

However, I do believe he's one of the old school as far as photography is concerned - I'm sure he's still using film. I assumed that would extend to the end result as a silver print.

As you say - I could be wrong...

I couldn't find any information to say that EE's prints were anything other than silver prints in the Venice exhibition. But I did find and read some interesting links, where it explains that he has been involved in doing some rather large format (76 x 102 cm / 30 x 40 inch) hybrid negatives to produce some platinum contact prints from some of his older negatives.

Here are four links that are worth reading:
