New Book: Eleventyone Portraits 1841 to 1950
I am very proud to announce that my new book, Eleventyone Portraits 1841 to 1950, printed by Friesen's of Altona, Manitoba is now available. The book is 9x9 inches in size, hard covered and 268 pages in total, with 114 full colour plates.
This book arose out of a wish to make available the collection of portraits that I have gathered during my working life. With an interest in photography, portraiture, history and a need to cover my walls with something of interest, I collected a series of photographic portraits representing the technical history of photography from 1841 to 1950. While many plates are by anonymous photographers and with anonymous subjects, there are many previously unpublished portraits by well known photographers including Pierre Petit, Rogi Andre, Notman, Rose Marie Clausen, Max Thorek, Marcus Adams, August Sander, Gertrude Käsebier, Clarence White, Paul Anderson, Alice Boughton, Doris Ullman, Arnold Genthe, Erich Salomon, Clara Sipprell, Lotte Jacobi, and Daguerreotypist Richard Beard. Each plate is accompanied by a page of text discussing the photographic technique, the sitter, the photographer and particularly the concept of character as it relates to portraiture. In order to make the plates as available as possible to people interested in this sort of thing the book is sold at cost ($80 Canadian per book) plus shipping. Many thanks to Robert Tombs, President of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts and a noted book and graphic designer who designed the book! further details are at www.eleventyoneportraits.com |

Excellent idea and superbly put into a wonderful work. Congratulations, Bill!
By the way, Friesens of Altona, Manitoba sounds just right, also when you omit Manitoba. Frank |

Mail to the United Kingdom from Canada can be expensive, unfortunately. As much as $85 (about 50 pounds for the fastest and priciest) but Small package Surface International is $24.96 (about 14.33 pounds).
Here is another page of interest to British readers. http://eleventyoneportraits.com/wp-c...e-1024x512.jpg |

Here is another set of pages; a very early example of August Sander and his mature New Objectivity style.

Here are a few more pages for perusal. The book is still to be had at cost plus postage.
The most notable is the portrait of Dikran Garabed Kelekian, a major intermediary between the shadowy world of eastern antiquities and western collectors in the early 1900's. Even more interesting in the world of photography is that this is a portrait by Rogi Andre, the first wife and protege of André Kertész, whose real name was Rosza Klein. The marriage was short-lived and he never spoke about it. http://eleventyoneportraits.com/eleventyone-portraits/ http://eleventyoneportraits.com/elev...e-portraits/3/ http://eleventyoneportraits.com/elev...e-portraits/7/

I am very pleased to have been noticed by Mick Johnston and been his Book of the Year for 2021.
https://theonlinephotographer.typepa...reat-book.html I have added a few images and pages to the sample pages section of the Word Press web site. http://eleventyoneportraits.com/ http://eleventyoneportraits.com/wp-c...-1024x1024.jpg http://eleventyoneportraits.com/wp-c...-1024x1024.jpg These might be of interest to UK viewers especially as they are very very early British images.
