Craftsmen produce things for a defined purpose which might include decorative objects. Artists are expressing their thoughts and feelings through the work they make, whether or not it has a practical, or decorative purpose.

Where do you place the divide between work produced as art, and that which is the product of craft?

As I already said, when the work has something to say about culture. What does that mean? It means it has something to say about the human condition in all its variations, traditions, ideologies, social constructs, anthropomorphisms etc etc etc, the list is endless.

When the work is purely for the self and communicates nothing about the human condition then it fails my personal art test and fails to make the transition to art. YMMV

p.s. It is not that it has has actually failed anything, it has just been erroneously given an attribution that it doesn't belong to which is a very very common ocurrence IMO

I can understand what you are saying, Argentum, and I largely agree with you. The point made by Skellum about artists having a compulsion to produce work is important. I had the privilege of working next to a young photographer in the Art School darkroom a few years ago. He produced images that were made up of projected negatives, photograms and applied text. I thought he was crazy due to the frantic speed at which he worked. It was clear, however, that he had a drive to express his thoughts, feelings and view of the world he inhabits through his photographic work. His prints were unique and thought provoking. Whether or not he ever achieves recognition for his work, I would consider him to be a photographic artist.

There are many ways to interpret that. It could, for example, be a tendancy towards OCD.

Photography is a medium. Art is what you do with that medium.

Photography is not art but can be used to create it.

Agree, very well put.

As for the dictionary definition of ART:

noun
1 [mass noun] The expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.

And thats just one dictionary and only a summary of its definitions which has at least 6 variations of the definition (proof enough that nobody quite knows, they're still working on it...)

And then another dictionary has a load more variations on a theme.

Seems it means whatever you want it to be if take the take the word of a dictionary.
