stainless steel tanks and reels?
Anyone use stainless developing tanks with hewes reels? If so, do those very thin looking tank lids have a decent light trap in them and how fast does developer go into them? Slow, medium or quick? How do you rate the tanks. They look OK to me but just wondering before jumping.
Like the ones listed on the calumet site below: http://www.calumetphoto.co.uk/item/CP9078/

Sorry Rob, I have not used them. However Hewes products are usually top class.

The tanks aren't made by Hewes. They don't make circular tanks, they only make the reels to go in them. It's the plastic top and its light trap that I'm really wondering about. The price is very good compared to jobo tanks.

As a plastic man I cannot be of much help but to say it's a reputable supplier so I would be happy dealing with them. Quite a few steel reels trundling through ebay at the moment, but no tanks; yet.

I started using Hewes reels and Kindermann tanks (cos they're the cheaper ones) with the plastic lids many years ago when I got fed up trying to shove 120 rollfilm up a plastic spiral.
IMO, they're not quite as quick to fill and drain as the trap space is smaller, but they're not far off - I could empty a Patterson daylight tank in 10 seconds without any problem but the 450ml(ish) Kindermann takes all of that and sometimes a few seconds more. Nothing two drastic though. I also found that life was too short to buy anything other than the Hewes reels. They are more expensive but worth every penny. Hope this helps. |

Thanks thats useful to know. The jobo 2500 tanks are very quick to fill and empty but for hand processing they take too much chemistry.
I think Kinderman no longer make tanks. The ones at Monchrom are sourced from Japan. I don't where Calumet get theirs but they are a decent price. I think I will get a 2x35mm reel tank and try it out.

I just ordered the tank from calumet. I ordered the reels direct from Hewes, they are a bit cheaper that way at at £11 + vat for 35mm reels.

I bought one from Calumet and it's pretty much identical to the Kindermann one that I already had.

Reels and tanks arrived already. First impression is how they small they are compared to plastic tanks. Which means they will be very economical in chemistry usage. But keeping temp constant would be a problem if ambient temp was much different to developer temp. But since dev temp is near to room temp I don't think there will be a problem. The hewes reels are very solid indeed.
Now to the 510-Pyro which Mike Currie very kindly sent.

Good luck with the 510-pyro. Let us know how you get on and what you think of it.
