Rest in Peace...Per Volquartz 1947-2011
I regret to pass on the news that Per Volquartz passed away this morning at 5:45 California time. Found the post this morning on the Large Format Photography Forum. . . a sad day for us all.

Condolences to all who knew him.
I'm ashamed to say, I've heard of the name but not of his work so here's a link to his site; http://www.pervolquartz.com/currvit.html

JB, I spotted this news on APUG as well. Always sad when anyone dies. It seems only recently that there was a thread on a forthcoming workshop so I am assuming that the illness was relatively short and death somewhat unexpected.
I don't wish to appear to be ghoulish but do you or anyone else know what the illness was and for how long he has been ill? Again and at the risk of appearing callous, he was a relative unknown to me. It may be just me or it may be that he was relatively unknown this side of the Atlantic. However anyone held in the esteem he was has to be someone who warrants interest from the analogue community. Can you give a synopsis of his analogue history? Thanks Mike |

Hi Mike,
I did not know Per personally, but I do know he was heavily involved in LF photography and held a number of free workshops in and around the S/W USA. . . he lived in California. If you do a Google search you will find more information and seems there are a few video on YouTube. From the original post I first saw on the LF Board this morning by matthew blais. . . "My friend and mentor, Per Volquartz passed away this morning due to several complications from a kidney infection. He fought the fight... Per was responsible for bringing many photo and LF enthusiasts together for the last 10 years, offering free Workshop/Get Togethers at various locations. Myself and others benefited through his gracious ability to share not only his knowledge and love of photography and art, but his friendship. He will be missed by many..." It is always a sad day when we lose a fellow LF friend and promoter of traditional photography. |

Thanks for the post JB. I did not know Per but I always hoped he would run a LF workshop somewhere in Europe.

Thanks JB That helps fill the picture out. It does sound as if the complications became suddenly life threatening. Not old at 64.

Sad news - I have exchanged prints with Per in the past - he certainly knew his craft!
