A few weeks ago I was reminded of Erwitt and in preparation for a 'lockdown' I borrowed monographs from the library on him and the following: Walker Evans, Cartier-Bresson, Lewis Hine, Robert Doisneau, Brandt, Brassai, Atget. Of course I remember Erwitt's many books but on reflection I believe that he's one of the best. I was surprised that I found Doisneau's countless unthinking & indiscriminate shots of Les Halles, Paris, tiresome. Lewis Hine won my admiration and it is sad that he never reached the acclaim that he deserved in his lifetime. Brassai, again a lot of 'snaps' in busy streets. Perhaps, that's what magazine editors wanted. It was a different age. Much more up-to-date is the book 'Another London' by the Tate Gallery. There's a 1956 Erwitt in there of two fellows peering from a train window; he captures a taut and spare moment superbly. There are many fine photographers included therein; a 'find' for me from the 1950's is Sergio Larrain! Others: - Marketa Luskacova (1980's).

Thanks, Rick. I'll look those last 2 names up as they're not familiar to me.
