Rodinal and Pan F
Les, my young nephew is just starting out on monochrome developing and printing and I am trying to help him as much as possible but anxious that he develops his own style and not be pushed by me into a particular direction.
He is keen to use the combination of Pan F and Rodinal and has asked me for advice on processing. I have printed his question below and would appreciate your advice and any help you can give. I don't want him to become discouraged and feel he should explore the way he wants to go without the influence of my rather traditional approach. Hi Tony, I most certainly don't feel like I've got this developing business sorted I still feel very new to it! I suppose I've only been at it for 3 months now. I would love an enlarger, people are literally giving them away on ebay. But my camera and developing takes up enough stuff as it is and I cannot turn my room into a darkroom! I get my film from 7dayshop as it is, I've noticed a lot of their stock now is 'on-order'. I used 1+50 for the FP4+ and 1+100 for the pan F+. I'm really not sure how well they're developed as I went easy on the agitation (two slow inversions per minute with a 'swirl' and tap) and the pan f+ seems very contrasty on my scanner. I think it needed longer. Let me know how they enlarge and if I need more time on the development (I got images from a scan but I heard that's fairly easy, I heard wet printing really shows how bad a neg has been developed) . Rodinal and pan f+ is a combination I will be working on and want to get right! What is your view on (semi) stand development? I like the look of it and really don't know how to start, there's so much contradictory times and info on the net. I just bought a good condition rolleicord Vb and so have just made the jump to 120, however I will not abandon my slrs! What cameras do you primarily shoot with, I have quite a collection now! Thanks I haven't got the negs. yet that he wants me to print but I will print them as soon as they arrive. Many thanks, Tony |

Hi Tony, this is a combination that I used very sucessfully for many years and can certainly recommend it. I'm currently in London and can't remember the dilutions and times I used (the ravages of age) but I'll fully answer the question when I get back home. Will you be at the meeting in the Lakes, if you are please let me know and I'll bring some examples of the combination with me for you to see.

Hello Les,
Thanks for your response, unfortunately I can't make the Lakes this time. It looks then as if young Matt is going down the right road so I will look forward to your detailed answer when it's convenient to yourself. Many thanks, Tony |

Hello Les,
Just a bit more info. on the above question. I have seen the neg. of the film that Matt has developed and the edge markings (frame numbers, film type etc.) are very faint and almost unreadable. The picture part is thin and flat but has detail everywhere. I guess this is a developer problem, perhaps not enough in the tank to cover the edge of the film and maybe too short a development time; what do you think? Tony |

Hi Tony, I'm finally home for the weekend so I can sort out your nephew's problem. I've checked my Rodinal/PanF negatives for time and dilution, I gave 6 minutes at 1+25 which produced excellent negatives. From your nephews description of his process and your comments having seen the negatives I think the problem is twofold, one insuficient exposure compounded by under development. If he used 1+100 he would need to extend the development significantly: something like 30 to 35 minutes. I'd suggest to him to expose a test film on the same subject half exposed as he would normally expose and half with one stop more and develop for 6 minutes at 1+25. Given that he is just learning the process should he need more specific help in assessing the test film I'd be happy to have him send it to me so that I can make the judgement for him.
Please let me know how he manages through this exciting time in his photographic development. |

Hello Les,
Thanks for your response, I am a bit late in replying as I have only come back from holiday today. I will be passing on your advice immediately and I am sure he will take up your offer to have a look at his test film. There is something not quite right with the negs and your advice will be invaluable. Many thanks, Tony |
