External shutter for a large format lens
Does anyone know what is available for a shutter for a large format lens.
I have recently acquired a Toyoview 4*5 large format camera. My interest at the moment is landscape photography, once this virus shutdown is lifted. I purchased a Toyo Kogaku Super Topcor 90mm F5.6 lens, The lens board was too small for my camera so I made a adapter up from some aluminum. This lens was pretty cheap, now for reason for my quirey. I have been looking at 300mm large format lenses for portrait shots. The cost of these with a lens board and shutter is very expensive taking into consideration the initial cost plus the exchange rate of the Australian dollar plus postage is way outside of my price range. On the other hand there is a lot of old Russian large format lenses available that are much cheaper and in my price range. I have no wish to be taking a lens cap off and timing it and putting it back on. I have seen a you tube video where the presenter use a after market shutter arrangement that was pneumatic and was operated by compressing a bulb. Does anyone know of what would be available and where to purchase it. |

Hi, just a couple of questions;
1. Which size boards does your Toyoview take? 2. Is it just a longer lens that you're after or the ability to use barrel and vintage lenses? Perhaps you could send a link to the video so we can see the set-up.

You might be looking for a roller blind shutter, made by Thornton Pickard and other companies, or a Packard shutter which, I think, is the bulb operated type. I’m not sure how you work out the correct size, but these are shutters for barrel lenses. Try searching for these on eBay, and that should give you some idea of what is available.

Hello Marty, the Toyoview takes a 100mm lens-board, my 90mm lens has a 80mm lens-board, the adapter was simple to make and works well.
In answer to your second question, I am interested in a 300mm vintage lens. a Russian lens, as these are plentiful and cheap. My reasoning for this selected size is since a large format lens is 3 times the size of a 35m lens then my present lens of 90mm is equivalent to 28 to 30mm in a 35mm lens. I have a variety of 28mm lenses I use for landscape shots. My 35mm go to lens for portraits is 104 mm so 300mm in large format should suffice. |

I haven't tried Thornton Packard shutters so I can't comment on them. Although perhaps the next cheapest options to look into would be either;
1. The horseman 2x large format teleconvertor. 2. Schneider Symmar convertible lenses 150/265 or 180/315. By the way, I suppose bellows draw won't be a problem as you will need around 450mm to do head and shoulder portraits with a 300mm lens. Less if you use a lens with a telephoto design.

Search on Youtube for Topshit Photography he has made a simple guillotine shutter and a remote guillotine shutter you may get some ideas.

I have quite a variett of external shutters, I specialise in restoring Thornton Pickard roller blind shutters and have quite a lot
There's also front mounting leaf shutters made by LUC and Gitzo, these are single speed sometimes with flash sync. Easiest with the Russian 300mm is a TP shutter, probably front mounted, not sure of the size of these lenses may be too large for the between lens (and board) type. This is quite a large TP shutter on a 20" f8 Rapid Rectilinear lens used with a 12"x10" camera. Gives speed of 1/10 to 1/90, the lnes board is 6¼" square and the shutter 6¼"x5" Ian |

If you buy an Industar 37 f4.5 300mm lens make sure you get one with the flange/retaining ring.
My guess is your Toyo View is a monorail camera, most of the Toyo field cameras have insufficient bellows draw for a 300mm lens except for use around Infinity. I need a 300mm for my 18x24 Reeisekamera, so may consider one myself, I have a very nice condition Bausch and Lomb Anastigmat I'd planned to use but it's a 25" f9 lens and there's not enough extension Ian |

Ian, my Toyview is a monorail.
There is two rails supplies that join together. It has been set up for landscape with a leather bag instead of bellows. I have been watching youtube on how to construct them, so getting the 300mm lens and portrait shoots is a way off yet but with my 90mm lens it is a sweet setup for landscape photography. |
