old sports lens
I bought myself a 600mm novoflex follow focus lens ,I always wanted one and now they are affordable I bought one ,I have been shooting it wide open at 5.6 on a monopod 400asa Ilford delta film and the fastest speed I could use ,with my Nikon F4 camera and novoflex realise cable .
first of it works better on a bright day because it needs a lot of light ,its made like a telescope it has two lenses at the front a long tube and the camera at the back ,I was surprised how sharp it is and how easy it is to use ,it has two grips one to focus and one with the shutter realise button .here are some scanned negative of the lens and some photos I took with it, sorry they are not prints but they are just to illustration if they all don't come up I will post some more ... |

That's a big beast Paul. Is the Novoflex made for the Nikon lens fitting or can it be made to fit any camera via an adaptor?
I have a Tamron 100-300 zoom for my Pentax for which I possess a 2x converter so effectively 600. It is much shorter than the Novoflex but the price I pay is that the aperture is much smaller than 5.6. I keep meaning to try a pic of the full moon but haven't bothered as I had assumed that the moon would be much smaller. However your pic of the moon has caused me to reconsider Thanks Mike |

hi mike ,yes you can get an adaptor to fit any 35mm camera . the lens is quite light for its size ,and when photographing the moon ,you need a fastish shutter because the moon moves fast when you look through the camera . I took a couple of the moon ,but a bloody flying soccer kept getting in the way .the pictures of the horses came out more sharper than I expected .

Thanks Paul. Did you mean a flying saucer and not soccer. The difference is that on a flying saucer there is a green guy called the Mekon steering it whereas on a flying soccer there is a similar guy but he is called Harry Kane
What was the price of the Novoflex if I may ask. A rough range of prices that you saw on your search for your lens will do if you'd rather not say what you paid Thanks Mike |

they vary in price as you can see on ebay ,I paid a premium because its in mint condition ,but I would go for the last model like mine don't buy the earlier models. they are a lot cheaper than say a Nikon 600mm lens

Reminds me of the Big Bertha reflex camera I saw at a camera fair about 10 years ago. An SLR mounted on a board the a sort of sliding box focus and a huge fast Dallmeyer Telephoto stuck on the end about 3 or maybe 4ft long. It had been used for sports photography particularly cricket. The SLR was 5x4 I think.
The Novoflex and similar killed them off, nice bit of kit Paul. Ian |

Interesting lens. I used to have a 400mm 5.6 which I enjoyed a lot. Recently picked up a 500/8 mirror lens supposedly to replace it.
The viewfinder is Inky dark! Not sure I'll be able to use it except on a tripod. |

I leave it set on 5.6 ,its a lot darker than my 300mm 2.8 ,but a lot brighter than a mirror lens at F8 ,if you look at the photos of the horses you can see how sharp it is ,when I am a bit better I will go to the bird sanctuary on the way to Canvey island ,if I can to give it a go.
