Question RB67 v RZ67

Guys, I have never quite understood - Mamiya seem to have two almost identical cameras, the RB67 and the RZ67

What is the difference between the two models ?

Are there applications where once model is preferable over the other ?

Are the choice of lenses much different ?

Martin

Basically the RB range uses mechanical shutters whilst the RZ uses electric.

And I believe that the lenses are not interchangeable between the two models.

They are in one direction only. The RZ can use RB lenses but not the other way round.

Thanks guys

I have never seen a description for the differences anywhere.

I did handled an RB many years ago, all I can remember is it was (or seemed) huge, was built like a Tank and weighed about as much as one too.

The other thing I remember is the noise it made when the shutter was fired - loud and reassuring substantial in its tone.

I have only ever seen them being used mounted on a Tripod - has anyone ever seen one being used hand held?

I sometimes used my RB67 handheld where it's weight added to the stability, but I preferred to use it on a tripod where possible. The shutters are quiet, it is mirror slap that you remember hearing, not dissimilar to most other MF cameras.

I have often seen one being used hand held. Usually in my own hands! The left hand grip is a useful accesory for hand holding.

I would ignore anyone who claims it is a camera for tripod use only but I would not state that it can be easily hand held. It is dependant on the person and it would be wise to try one out first before making a decision to get one.

The RB67 mirror slap is not too bad as it has a cam mechanism. It is a lot more tame than the slap on my smaller Bronica ETRS.

My RZ lenses are very sharp indeed. What viewfinder are you using?

I regularly shoot handheld with an RZ. The RZ is a bit lighter than the RB. There is lots of footage of people like Leibovitz and Rankin shooting hand held with one. I do use one of those neoprene straps, though.
I don't seem to have problems with sharpness but I seem to recall Annie Leibovitz mentioning this in the At Work book.
Focussing can vary depending on the focussing screen used. They are interchangeable. The RZ Pro II has a fine focussing adjustment.
