Matt Black Paint, Suggestions Please.
I have searched the forums to no avail.
I need a recommendation for matt black paint to touch up the insides of bodies, lenses etc. Simple specifications are..... Suitable for brush use. Available in the UK. Available in reasonably small quantities. Proper matt black dull finish, no sheen to it. Will go in in thin coats. Simple solvent to clean up after, meths, turps etc.. I have an old dried up bottle of Kodak Matt Black paint. It wasn't much good when it was new. Most photo forums that I have found anything about black paint have suggested American products, and using air brushes or aerosols. I want the controllability of a good old fashioned paint brush. Any suggestions please. |

There are modelling paints, both enamel and acrylic that may be usable. They tend to come in small pots, and are inexpensive. Acrylic cleans up with water. Have a look in the local model/toy shop, if you have one nearby.

I use one a lot and it's really cheap around £1.25 a small bottle from The Range.
Artiste, All Purpose Acrylic Paint - Black, made by Docraft I buy a few bottles at a time. I've only found one more matt and it's only sold in Turkey although made in the UK. Ian |

A good true matt black paint can be bought from model shops under the name of Humbrol. It is/was an oil based paint so will need thinners to clean the brush. IT will take a couple of hours to dry and the next day to harden off. I have found it covers far better than acrylics.

Nat, I have used two products both by Rustins, to paint the insides of home-made cameras. Rustins Matt Black and Rustins Blackboard paint. Both are excellent. You should be able to get either of these easily from any hardware shop. My small local market town - Malton - has at least four shops that sell these paints.
Note that the good thick stuff settles to the bottom of the tin, so give it a good stir. I would avoid Artists' acrylic paint as it is not matt enough. I once read that the ultimate in non-reflective matt black is black stove enamel, but I have no experience of it. Alan |

I've got a very good tin of black MATT paint in my darkroom, that I have used to paint the insides of pinhole cameras. I bought it for a reasonable price at my local B+Q, but it is NOT a B+Q brand.
I hope to get into the darkroom later today, so will post details then or when next in there. Terry S PS And having just checked out the Nisbets 'Blackboard paint', I do wonder if it is suitable, as it has a 'slight sheen' and says 'not suitable for darkrooms', so I do wonder about using it inside camera bodies...? To add to the mix, I use a paint made in Hull, called "Coo-Var". It's water-based. The paint can go straight on to wood or plastics (I think); but for metals a primer with the same brand name is also available. Dead simple to use.
