Default Slide Projector

I bought my Kindermann Diafocus A many years ago. Right from the start I suspected that it was pretty poor, but so was I at the time and had few choices. The problem is the lens. Focused on the centre, the edge is out of focus and visa versa. There is no happy compromise. I have decided to try for something better, bearing in mind the potential increasing scarcity of such things. Can anybody give me some advice on something better, or has anybody got anything they would part with. I have read good reports on the Leica with a Colourplan lens, but web searches proved fairly elusive. I really do not wish to get involved with ebay or other countries. Also does anybody know if another and better lens would fit the Kindermann. Thank you.
Stuart.

Hi Stuart,

This is a common problem caused more by the slide than the lens because the film tends to "pop" in the heat from the lamp. Glass mounts solve that but have their own problems (mould, dirty glasses etc). Or you can get a Leitz lens with a curved field. I'm not sure of the name - I dare say someone here will know both that and whether it would fit your Kindermann.

I have a Zeiss-Ikon Perkeo and the standard lens with that was not brilliant. However the machinery and build quality is very good, and I bought the higher quality lens to replace the standard one. This made a big difference in sharpness and contrast, and the depth of field seemed better also. Leitz Pradovit projectors came with a decent lens as standard which is why they had such a good reputation, but personally I don't think the projector chassis is a patch on the Z-I. When I was in a camera club they had a hugely expensive 250W Leitz and the thing was forever jamming. It went back and forth for service but was never properly fixed. I personally have no time for Kodak Carousels either, most seem to have poor illumination and the mechanism is complex and troublesome. I have a 6x6 Kindermann which is not bad although again, a better lens would help. So if your Kindermann is basically sound I'd try and find a high quality lens for it.

I'm still using a Noris 6x6 which I bought many years ago. It's served me well, surviving a fall from the top of a wardrobe, and the original bulb is still in use. I agree glass mounts are best, but they're very difficult to obtain now.

Thanks for the feedback. In view of this I think I will probably stick with what I have. Maybe expectations are just too high. After all the Kindermann has been in use for probably twenty years. I think I always compared it with memories of a cheapish and low powered Agfa stack loader that we had at work in our photographic society, which I recalled as being superb. Perhaps it's just a case of selective memory and rose tinted specs.
