I went for hardwood plywood, it seemed a good compromise between price and performance. A sheet of marine plywood is really expensive, I was shocked by how much.

However, if I had to do it again I would spend the extra, purely because there were bubbles and gaps in the hardwood ply - some of which I managed to fill, but there were some on the surface which may well cause problems in the future and need sanding and repainting.

Oh, and it was 12mm plywood. At the moment I don't see a need to go thicker, as I braced it around the perimeter and half way down as well.

12mm marine ply is great stuff and practically indestructible. I had the great luck to get some umpteen years ago for practically nothing. I use it to form a stable platform under a set of steps when I need use them for pruning an apple tree and need to avoid the steps sinking into the lawn. Even with my weight the uncushioned legs of the steps make no marks in the ply
