The orange mask is not just an all-over filter layer. It is the uncoupled dye that, after chromogenic development, produces a cyan image. This dye should pass blue light without attenuation but in practice it absorbs quite a lot. The orange density reduces as the cyan density increases, which compensates for the blue absorption.
Non-Kodak colour negative emulsions such as those from Agfa and Gevaert did not have the orange appearance. |
