Default Winding an unloaded Yashica Mat

Is it safe to wind the crank and cock the shutter on my Yashica mat when it has no film in it? I have a mint one arriving today and I don't want to break it. I have read that it isn't advisable to wind it with an empty spool in the top, something to do with tension. Any advice would be great fully received. My last yashica mat eBay purchase was a disaster, so I am a bit nervous lol

Haven't had one for some years Peter, but I have quite a lot of other mechanical cameras (35mm and 6x6). Some don't get used very often so I get them out periodically and exercise all the shutters without film in.
Haven't harmed a camera yet, but have kept some sluggish shutters alive.

If nobody has a definitive answer, maybe ask a camera repair guy?

I used to own one many years ago and cannot remember having to take any special precautions with winding or using the wind on. Very nice TLR they are too and you should make some stunning images with it.

I bought one recently. I’m a bit worried now! I have run a couple of films through it with no apparent issues, but I would suggest a look at the instructions might be in order. I’m going to try to do that.

I looked at the 124G instructions. There’s nothing about winding an unloaded camera. Two points worth noting, however, are don’t use the self-timer when the flash sync is set to M, and wind the camera first before setting the self-timer lever.

Thanks all
I found this, I guess we have nothing to worry about

My yashica mat is mint. The only thing I found on it was a very feint mark on the lens, only visible when viewed from the back. It looks like how water marks on glass look. It is so feint I am not worried (but I will only be completely satisfied when I process the test roll of rpx 100). Re the flash sync issue, I downloaded the manual from butkus and its mentioned in there. It really is a lovely thing, especially given the fact that it is 50 years old
