Thank you for sharing this, very interesting.

I have quite a bunch of book form St. Ansel, but my photographic knowledge evolved rather the other approach.

It would be interesting to see that exhibition. I would not have been in a position to either see, judge or appreciate it until relatively recently as I was not born until 1949.

We are all different in the teaching approaches that work for us as are the reasons for pursuing an interest in photography. There are no right and wrongs. Finding the right approach that suits us individually should one want to pursue this way of learning is to some extent a matter of luck, as is the success or otherwise of our education when young.

Thanks for posting.

Mike

Yes, Mike, that's the only thing that's missing from the article, more images to give a greater and more visual impression of the differences.
And I don't know if it's possible to find out what images were shown at the time?

Thanks for posting this article, Martin. It is very interesting. It seems to me that the League was more of a club type situation, whereas the Californian institution was more like an art school. It may, or may not be significant, but I think you tend to see more published work by people who have connections to Adams and White, than those claiming membership of the League. Perhaps, for people who studied in the Californian style, photography was their life, whereas for the League people, it was just a part of their life?
Alex.

Very well put, Alex. And from what I've been reading, that's certainly the level of commitment that the California school of fine art was after.

Certainly questions 8 & 9, as part of the entrance to CSFA, specifically relate to and confirm your point, Alex.

Yet more photographers to look up by me, in Q10.

And I am curious as to what Q4, 'What kind of music do you like best?' says about anyone of the time and if your answer to this question would immediately let you onto the course or not?

To have gotten onto my photography degree course, one had to have a portfolio of work and write about one side of A4, about any of your favourite photographers. Although I have a few, I wrote about Nick Brandt, a wildlife photographer, who has a unique style of his own that I like, especially in his black and white work.
