Heidi Alexander's Stockport
An article from the Guardian about the photos that Heidi Alexander took in 1970s Stockport.
A book and an exhibition are in the pipeline. https://www.theguardian.com/artandde...et-in-pictures |

These photos bring back memories of visiting the Barras in Glasgow as a teenager in the late ‘70s. The scene was very similar. You could buy practically anything, and at one point there were two camera shops. I bought my first developing equipment from one of them. I took some photos of the market at the time, but have no idea where they are now. I do recall they were on Ilford FP4 in a Practika. Thanks again for posting more interesting material, Nick.

There's going to be an exhibition of her work at the Stockport restaurant Where The Light Gets In from 23 April.

Thanks for the link. It now looks as if they were straight out of Coronation Street's outdoor scenes of its early era when TV was all b&w
Well within my living memory but even for me, now has a distinct feel of "history" A truly bygone time that makes me wonder: Was I really a young man then? Mike |

I somehow managed to miss this post first time around.
There are some great pictures there and I love the expressions of some of the people who saw the camera. It takes me back to the time when I was a teenager and just starting out in photography. The fashions of the day and those almost unbelievable prices bring back good memories. And I'm sure like many, I also took local pictures like this, including a street party for the Queen's silver jubilee celebrations. I was only just starting out as a teenager then, in 1977. Regrettably, when I left home in 1978, my mum cleared out my bedroom. In doing so, she threw away a lot of b/w negatives and prints, but I suppose neither of us thought that they would become useful historical images many years later... I would love to see the exhibition tour a little bit, so many more people can see the pictures. Terry S |
