Photography Magazines.
I had a look at a large newsagents magazine racks for anything to do with photography.
Just a couple of magazines on digital, and a copy of Amateur Photographer. A.P. is now about a quarter the thickness it used to be in its heyday. The last issue I bought a few months ago had one article on analogue photography, and that was just a trip down memory lane telling you very little about a couple of film cameras from the fifties. The digital articles told you nothing of any use. No technicalities, not that I would understand digital science. It must be dammed hard for the staff writing articles on a subject whilst holding back on information, or are they clueless about the subject? "Keep Them Guessing." must be the company motto. Have all the old grey haired film and developer guys n gals left the industry and gone to work in living museums? So much for progress. Does anyone know of a decent practical photography magazine? Now that was a cracking magazine, "Practical Photography." |

It's all online now, no publishing costs.
There are no honest magazines any more and most in the last 40+ years were dishonest, reviews etc biased towards advertisers. Camera which started as camera User was an exception but merged with Photo Technique and finally lost it. BJP is the most consistent and the oldest in the world but tried to fill the gap of DPict, formerly reative Camera and a few other magazines like Ten8 and Portfolio. Ian. |

Thick or thin
I can only imagine that the lack of thickness (and some say quality) is down to the reduction in the number of adverts all down to the freedom of information easily available on various websites. Also I feel that there is only so much that can be written about new programmes because the world of a computer is changing so fast and what they write may already be out of date. As for film based photography there is only a small market for it so they cater for the greater audience - it is the way of business.
There is also a complete dearth of articles on composition, what looks good and what doesn't. Then there is the art of mounting a print properly, it isn't easy to get it right. I have seen some real dross exhibited at local exhibitions. In the main through lack of expertise or miss matched mount colours that are more interesting than the print! Apart from that, all adverts 'on line' are up to date as well. Before that, the hard copy of the adverts were submitted (by fax - remember them?) at least a week and half before they went into print. The computer is a good servant, but increasingly I fear the servant is taking charge of the master. Last edited by John King; 6th January 2020 at 08:53 PM. |

We may be seeing a revival of film according to some sources(wishful thinking?) but as far as I can see this is at best a relative revival and I cannot see a revival that will really attract the attention of photography magazines any time soon in a sufficient size to warrant their attention.
I suspect that most if not all the newcomers to film use what is known as the hybrid process i.e. film processing but "virtual" prints from negative scan reversal or inkjet prints So in short, magazines need mass audience purchase and other than occasional articles on new films such as Ilford Ortho Plus I do not expect to see enough on analogue from any magazines to make their purchase worthwhile. What I am certain about is the the heyday of the likes of AP or Practical Photography are gone forever as we understood and read such magazines Mike |

Amateur Photographer had quite a big article about darkroom work towards the end of last year. It covered around four pages. It didn’t teach me anything, but it was well put together and, I felt, encouraging for people coming into traditional photography. It’s not the first article of this type they have produced, which suggests there is a demand.

I stopped subscribing/buying a year or so back largely because of the homogenous content across different titles and the cyclical nature of articles. The same articles being rehashed albeit with different pictures on the same subjects (ie at Autumn, fireworks night, Spring, best macro ever ...)
Sadly I have to agree that the heydays of the physical magazine are gone and as someone who prefers to read a physical book than an e-book on my tablet this is a shame. But, hey ho, that’s progress and to be fair there is so much more content available these days compared to what I could access 45+ years ago when I started out - albeit online and much of doubtful pedigree or provenance. |

Overall it is a very well put together 'magazine' (more of a thin book really) and well worth checking out if you haven't all ready. I'm not sure if it's on the magazine shelves or whether you have to put an order in or order directly with the publisher? Either way, I highly recommend it. Terry S |
