Default Bulk loaders, weights when empty

Knowing the empty weight of a loader means we can work out (approx) how much film we have left. This is very useful as some loaders come with no way of knowing. I weighed the nice Watson 100 i got from Michael and it is 326g. Now we need the rest. I am working on film being 2g per foot, is that about right?

Watson 100 - 326g
Alden 74 -
Computrol -
Lloyd's -
Bobinquick/AP/Jessop -

My Bobinquick/AP/Jessop is 302 gms including the crank handle. I had no idea that the Alden was only 74 gms and a third of the weight of the AP and less than a quarter of the weight of a Watson. This seems incredibly light. So light in fact that it might be worth another check Peter

Hah, noooo the Alden is possibly the heaviest of the bunch, 74 is just the model I have been using my Lloyd and it is surprisingly good for such a basic thing but I can't weigh it yet as it has the remnants of some fp4 (no +) safety film in it. The trouble with the Lloyd is that it has no dials whatsoever so you either log every roll or weigh it to find out how much you have left

OK and thanks Peter. If I had looked more carefully I'd have seen that there was only a space after 74 and it was not the weight but the model number

I must admit that I'd be unhappy with bulk loaders that had no indication of film usage

The AP's and one I think is called a Telesar which I also have do have usage dials and it's a benefit worth having for the convenience but no doubt they cost more to buy

The AP is the rolls royce of loaders and, to be honest, it isn't a lot more expensive, maybe £25 or so than a new computrol or Lloyd but they don't come up that often, unlike the Watson's, lloyds and aldens. Consequently, loads of us have loaders with either unreliable counters that give you a ball park figure or no counter at all. The computrols have a reasonable counter, the Alden's have a dial that only goes up to five meters, the Watson's and Lloyd, Nada lol. Organized people can keep a log of what's used. Idiots like me need a way to find out what's left when we realise we forgot to write down a roll or several I swore my next bulk loader would be an AP but I bet I stumble across a Watson containing "mistry" film and I won't be able to resist

Lloyds 352 g including plastic core of 100 ft, without the winding handle. The core weighs about 7 g.

I measured 35mm film weight back in 2019. About 181 g for a 100 ft bulk roll, checked with FP4+ and HP5+.

Its one of those facts that you don't need until you need it lol. A few bulk loaders come up for sale with "mistry" film. Its so handy to be able to work out how much you got
