I'm very fond of my Olympus OM1n. It does have a battery-operated meter, but that packed up years ago and I've never got round to getting it repaired. It's small, light, quiet (for an SLR) and a fantastic range of lenses that are mostly easily- available at a good price.

I've used loads of different 35mm cameras and I always fall back on my OM1.

I like to carry a decent size piece of glass so pocketability has never been a great concern. With no batteries at all I'd go with my Walz Envoy and its Sonnar type lens. Very well made cams.

Smallest battery free camera I have is a Rollei B35, charity shop purchase. Selenium meter and hot shoe, but no PC socket.

Fits in a shirt pocket where in the past I would have had my cigarettes.

I don't think there are many all round cameras that will fit in your pocket, unless you have very large pockets. That said the Olympus OM1 is very good and one of the smallest all rounders you will get.

Smaller still if you can find one with the 40mm f/2 "pancake" lens, but they're very rare and with a price to match.

The smallest non battery camera I have is my Voightlander Vito II, a folder that is so small that folded it fits into a shirt pocket, but has the color skoper lens, and a compur shutter,

The Pentax MX was my first SLR - certainly an excellent camera, as is the Olympus OM-1. May I also add to the list the Nikon FM and FM2n (which I now use). Again, fully mechanical and the battery is only required for the meter although I'd say these are probably slightly larger than the Pentax or Olympus.

The Nikon FM3a is an aperture priority and manual camera which requires a battery for its auto functions, however with no battery, it reverts to full mechanical operation and can be operated at all shutter speeds.

I have a Leica CL with the Summicron 40/2. The battery is just for the meter so can be left out. Small solid outfit.

I suppose if money is no object I would go for a Leica M with a 35mm lens. However I do like using my OM1 with 35mm shift lens, versatile yet quite compact.

For me :
Best for Travel or EDC is Leica M6 with 35 summicron lense.
Best for General is Nikon F2 .
I love them both after I do not to worry about just for subject what I want to shoot.
