Hello Cannik, I and I'm sure many on this site will sympathise with your predicament. However, this forum is, and as far as I know, the ONLY forum purely dedicated to film & darkroom on the WWW. So only wet printing and absolutely no digital or hybrid techniques are permitted.
Therefore the dilemma that all new members are faced with is either to wet print in a traditional darkroom or find an alternative forum which caters for digital and hybrid techniques of which there are many. There is only one FADU and that is what makes this forum and the people so unique.

Cannik, if you have a room as I think you stated you do, then blacking it out for nighttime printing might be quite easy and cheap and there are some cheap old condenser enlargers still out there which will still work . These are pretty primitive things with two condenser lens and a pearl type bulb in a housing then bellows, lens carrier and lens.
Have a look out for the likes of Gnome Beta enlargers. That way you can dip your toes in darkroom printing without much of an outlay and even if you decide that darkroom printing is not for you you have spent relatively little money Ilford will both develop and print for you on silver gelatin paper so your prints will qualify for scanning in FADU but this comes at a cost which if it were me, I wouldn't want to sustain unless I was only a very occasional user of b&w film and prints Mike |

I am making a habit of buying things I had before
I have just made an offer on my FIRST enlarger a UPA5 I know it is poor but it is the one I started with and as I have no intention of getting serious if nothing else it will make a nice item to look at. Can the bulbs still be got and I will have to re wire. |

It’s good to see you’re perhaps getting back into traditional printing. When you’re all set up, there’s a monthly print exchange that might be of interest to you.

Hi Cannik,
A slightly belated welcome to FADU and back into the world of printing. I can most certainly empathise with your journey down the rabbit hole of equipping a new interest. My darkroom started out in the laundry with a 1960s 35mm Czech enlarger and black garbage bags pulled over the flyscreens pillow case style and pushed back into the window frame and the trays rather precariously balanced across a too-narrow washing machine. Within a few years I had to move into the spare room (carpeted, no running water) to accommodate a medium format enlarger and the trays now reside on an ironing board with a long piece of plywood across the top (and the window still blacked out with garbage bags!). A few years later and I've gone from 35mm to 4x5 and yet another enlarger to print those larger negatives. All of this in a rental property that I can't permanently alter in any way, no climate control (the heater is at the opposite end of the house and remains unused - the cost of that would preclude me buying paper - priorities! - and no air conditioning and no running water in the darkroom itself. Being in Australia, this limits suitable darkroom temperatures to less than six months of the year. For all of the seemingly too-annoying-to-deal-with-hurdles, it's the most relaxing pastime I have and easily the most calming - even when my prints look like rubbish to me or I make endless mistakes. If you lived anywhere on the same continent as I, I'd be only too happy to make an occasional print for you. Since that's not the case, I'm happy to see you've acquired an enlarger. As to all of the accessories and necessities, keep in mind that a great many things can be bought from dollar stores, supermarkets or second hand. As soon as someone decides something is a specialised item, they like to bump up the price. Now that I've taken a breath - feel free to ask for tips and advice on getting your room set up there. All of us started (again) from scratch at some point and I'm fairly certain all of us have been in the position of having to 'make do and mend' so to speak. Welcome again and enjoy your darkroom. |

Cannik, if the window you show is the only one in the room and you can do printing after dark which is now about 7:30 and after the clock change will be about 5:30 -5:45 then a thick black curtain on rails might suffice then blackout takes about 10 secs
If said window is not South facing and not subject to the rays of winter sun then a thick black curtain might be enough for winter daylight printing as well Based on the rest of what you have said, I'd say you are about good-to-go Mike |

Thank you for your kind offer IF there is any Uk based person here able to do the odd one off for me I would be grateful to pay you, no hurry just IF you are doing your own. And the ODD one I find that may be Ok Many thanks I 100% agree that this is a great FILM do it only forum but, a separate section for people who CAN develop their own but scan in would be nice, why not, it could be a separate part/heading, for those DOING film, and developing who don't have either the money or access to a darkroom, we are not all fortunate to own a house. ....
