A number of tripods/heads have a reversible rod, 3/8" one end and 1/4" the other. It would be worth looking at your own tripod/head.

My tripod is a Velbon Sherpa 400 which I think is quite sturdy

From what I can see on velbon.biz, the Sherpa 400 mounts its heads on to a 3/8" fitting, which is fine. If the head you have has no option for a 3/8" camera attachment, the website shows two Velbon pan heads that would do - the PH-285 and PH-275. You may have to buy the 3/8" camera screw separately; but the website shows it available for each of those heads (the Gitzo heads I use came with 1/4" screws as default but the stronger ones are easily got).
