I would pick Jane Bown. It is amazing how modest equipment used by a great photographer can yield superb results.

Skellum, I too really like Fay Godwin's work. My Remains Of Elmet is dated 1979, and the photographs are printed quite dark and very atmospheric. Some of them appear in Land, which came later and are much more lightly printed, with a detached "neutral" look to them. I think Ian Grant knows something about who did the prints for these books.

By the way - I'm pleased I'm not the only one who likes James Ravilious.

Hi Alan- I also have the 1979 edition of Elmet, and as you say the prints are very moody, full of sombre skies and dark cobblestones. To this day, my printing tends towards higher contrast and deep blacks so perhaps she influenced me more than I thought.

James Ravilious was someone I only came across a few years back. His images are all about the people contained in them, but they still show masterful understanding of light. Lots are conter-jour, and his sunlit snow scenes are exquisite. Three or four years ago I was supposed to get a book of his photographs for Christmas, but somehow ended up with a collection of paintings by Eric Ravilious, a water-colourist.
Just not the same thing at all!

Hello Skellum,
I take it you realise Eric was James's father....
I have quite a few books about James Ravilious. I can recommend The Recent Past. It is quite large, and the photographs sing out. An English Eye is also very good on biographical information. Wonderful photographs, but rather small.
I think if James Ravilious was American he would be absolutely world famous....

Not even a second thought....
Jacques Henri Lartigue.
Not his later stuff (in the 60's), but when he moved from taking 'family snaps' to capturing real art. So about 1930, when he met Renee Perle.
Such style!

My pick from the old guard would be Edward Steichen. Still around, I would like to spend time with Austin Granger.

Alan, no I didn't realise. Very poor on my part.

Ted, I'm guessing you are familiar with Lartigue's stereoscopic images? I have a collection of them I was looking at again just the other day. Many simple, everyday scenes captured with real affection. Some of his best known images (like the racing car with apparently oval wheels) were taken in 3D. From what I've read of him he seems to have been a child blessed with a joy for, and curiosity about, life.

Minor White was also on my mind. Just had a look at his book "Mirrors, messages and manifestations". Not only are the photographs sublime but his use of sequences makes it the best laid out photography book, I've ever seen.

Steichen would be my number 2 - but only just.

That's a great question, skellum.

I think I'd be pretty happy spending a day with any of the great photographers already mentioned, but just to throw another name into the mix the photographer that I always return to is Robert Adams. Adams seems to be able to take the completely mundane and create something magical from it.
