This is good advice and if you don't manage to do this, use a leader extractor, as it allows you to load the first few inches of film (that fogged when you loaded the camera) into the spiral in daylight, thus making the process of loading the spiral much easier when in total darkness.

I use a leader extractor anyway, as it lets me shape the film to present it to the spiral easily. Once in the dark, I open the cassette with a pointy beer can punch. It works OK. If you detach the film from the spool, you get a bit more of the tail and don't risk spoiling your very last exposed frame.
