Filtration
No, nothing like my last thread, all's working superbly well.
When I started colour printing way back around 1990 I was told by my mentor at the time, never to use the Cyan filter channel, as all this does is to lengthen exposures. Since then, right up 'till now I have always followed the advice given and if an image showed a cyan cast, I used Kodak Colour Filtration viewing filters to judge how much I needed to change by adding Magenta and Yellow units in equal proportions. I may be a slow starter but I am now asking. why not use that channel? Apart from an exposure increase I cannot see any other disadvantage. (A 10x12 print rarely needs more than 15 seconds) What does any other colour printer do, the same as me, or do they use the cyan filter. |

When I was colour printing (Ciba and colour neg) I never used the Cyan either, I can't remember why not - I must have been taught that way. More likely though I just followed the maker's instructions or taken the advice from a book. Mind it is complicated enough with just playing with Y & M without introducing a third element !

Hi, there. I think the advice not to use the cyan filter came from not having to deal with neutral density. It's to make things simpler, said in other words. This is the way I understand it, from the point of view of a self taught printer. Other than that it is not strictly forbidden and may be useful in a couple situations. One is when you need a longer printing time, you add up to your filter pack the same amount of all three colors and there is no color change but only a longer time. The other is when let's say you're correcting a blue cast and you run out of yellow filter to remove. You add up the same amount of the three color as the amount of yellow you still need to remove and then you have more yellow to subtract. Or simplifying you just add that same amount of magenta and cyan. I hope this is useful.
Cheers, M. |
