I attempted to print my Kodak Gold negatives last night. I used a DeVere 504 enlarger which has a very powerful lamp, perhaps of 250 Watts. The prints I produced with the aperture of the enlarger lens fully open at f2.8, needed at least two minutes exposure. The contrast was very low, no doubt affected by the dark orange/brown base colour of the negatives. Using maximum Magenta filtration improved the situation, but still didn't achieve acceptable contrast. As a comparison, a standard B&W negative printed at the same aperture, and to the same size, would have required an exposure of 1-2 seconds on this enlarger. Luke's enlarger has the advantage of a condenser light source which should improve contrast, but perhaps only a 75Watt bulb, which could mean exposure times running into days! This sort of negative won't show the true capabilities of the enlarger. I would strongly recommend trying a conventional B&W film first before experimenting with the colour films. That way you will have a better idea of how the enlarger performs.
Good luck, though, however you decide to make negatives, and please let us know how you get on. Alex. |

Wow, Alex, 250W, f2.8 and 2 mins". If you get fed-up trying to print the negs then you can always wear them in place of a bulletproof vest
I applaud Luke's desire to experiment but like you I hope he doesn't draw the wrong conclusions about B&W printing from this. Mike |
