Hello from Teignmouth
Hi all. I am a Fellow of the RPS….Contemporary Visual Arts. My true interest is black and white, with a fascination for still life. I still like working with film, and have dug out both my old Leica M4 kit and my Rolleiflex 3.5F with the intention of learning and developing the best way of digitising my negatives in order to print them on my Epson PRO 3800. I don't believe that conventional scanners are the best way to do this, particularly with 35mm (results too coarse!). I would be really pleased to hear from anyone who has experimented with re-photographing negatives with a DSLR, such as the Canon 5D, in order to achieve the best quality image files. I have recently bought an old copy stand and a LED light pad for this purpose, and hope to start work soon.

Hello from Oxfordshire Paul. It hasn't occurred to me that anyone would use a digital camera to photograph negatives so can't help there I'm afraid. I agree with your premise that scans are not always great. For me "image files" are black folders with ring binding!

Welcome to the forum Paul. If it's specifically a hybrid work flow that you're after then a specialised forum may be better.

Hmmm,
strictly speaking anything containing the D word isn't allowed here but if we assume you are trying to copy a negative to film then you may want to look for a "Bowens Illumitrans" which can use your enlarging lens which is good because they are designed to be flat field to flat field. Just make sure it has the mount for your camera (I expect nikon is the most common) and that the bulb works OK and that you can get spare bulbs for it. http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?poi...d=978491075427 You could also look at any of the negative/slide duplicator attachments which fit onto your camera lens and you just place a strip of film into it. There were various makes including nikon, canon, ohnar and others if you search for them. Then for pure D duplication there are drum scanners but you are talking megabucks for those.
