Default How to create an avatar

Hi Dave,

I've been trying to create an avatar, but the 'edit avatar' function seems locked and I can't see how to do it. As the only member who's successfully achieved this so far - help please!

I shall do my best, but please appreciate that your knowledge of all things computer is much greater than mine.

First prepare your Avatar, in my case this is a small jpeg file of about 16k. That means small and low quality. Alternatively do a web search for something that appeals to you.

Save it on your computer somewhere that you can find it later.
From the tool bar at the top of the screen select “User CP” top left.
Select “Edit Avatar” from the menu on the left.
Use the browse button in the panel centre screen to find your saved file.
When you have, click the “Save Changes” button at the bottom of the screen, you may have to scroll down to see this.
Your Avatar should then appear on all your posts.

Hope that helps.

Further information on this topic can be found under "User Profile" in the FAQ section accessible from the tool bar.
The old adage about reading the manual when all else has failed springs to mind.

You're missing the point, Dave. Following the instructions in the manual brings you to the point that I described in my request for help: 'the 'edit avatar' function seems locked'. According to the manual it is possible for the Administrator to prevent members from setting avatars and, if this is the case, that's fine. If it isn't, however, you need to know that this feature of the software is currently unavailable or that the instructions for its use in the FAQ are unhelpful.

I tried as well and get the same 'locked' situation. I cannot change the radio button that prevents editing the settings.

I have updated the system settings (there is more than one place avatars need to be enabled in the system ) and it should work now ("Famous Last Words" Vol. 7; pp345).

Maximum size is 80x80 pixels and 19.5kB size. The system will resize any image over 80x80 pixels if you upload one but will reject anything over 19.5kB in size.

Let me know if it works OK now.

Bob.

I did indeed Dick, sorry. When I go into the software I need to take three days rations and a ball of string to find my way out again. I certainly should know better than to try it at 7am.

We seem to be getting an artistic selection of avatar's, so I'm off to the beautician to get mine up-dated.
