ISE Art.NO.F-18 Three Way easel mask
Hi, Does anyone know anything about The ISE Art.No.F-18 Three way easel mask. I have looked online and can't find out anything about it.
On the box it says it will do 8x10,5x7 and 4x5 prints. But I must admit that I don't really know how to set it up, can anyone help ? |

Hi, I take it you only have a picture of the box only i.e. you do not have the actual easel in a box ?
Can I ask where you found a picture of the box as the source ? What I am trying clumsily to get at is that you have no source for the easel itself from whom you can ask questions? I cannot find this easel in my searches at all so it's a rare beast. While it seems to be a fixed easel with 3 apertures this is an assumption on my part and assumptions are often proved to be wrong It might help if you were able to show the box you have seen. Thanks Mike |

Hi. If you have the thing, you could post some pictures, and someone may recognise it. You find easels that have 3 preset sizes. Jessops sold one. If I remember correctly, you can fold away the smaller size frames, until you reach the maximum size. If you don’t have it, and given it seems quite rare/unusual in the UK, you could look for a more available alternative. Most two blade easels can produce a range of sizes from the maximum down. Using a 16x12” easel for a 6x4” print can be a nuisance, so it’s worth considering what print sizes you want to work with, before decide what size easel to buy. The main difference between easels is the size of borders they can produce. If you like big borders, RRB, RR Beard is the way to go. If borders are less important, LPL make a good range. I found the fixed size type to be a bit inflexible in practice. Alex Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro |

Thanks, Michael. It looks to be better quality than the Jessops version, and straightforward to use.

LordClive- if this is the auction you're looking at it seems to be for all 3 easels.
If so, you probably won't use the ISE Art thing. Included is a 10x8 LPL adjustable easel which will handle all the smaller paper sizes with more flexibility. As Alex pointed out, the fixed size easel could be quite limiting in use. I have the 16x20 version of the LPL in my darkroom and it's good for bigger size prints. The only limiting factor is that you can't vary the border along the two sizes along which the arms slide, but that's common to many (most?) 2 blade easels. |

The following photos are 1. Normal placement of blades while in use. 2. The easel itself with the blades lifted up out of the way. 3. The entire easel flipped over, so this is the underside. The screw in the top corner are to adjust the borders. The Hansas don't have the screw, but they have the same metal sliding plate so one merely pushes it into the desired position by hand. |

The ISE Art easel pictured on eBay looks the same as a Durst Comask, perhaps a rebranded product. I have a Durst Comask which I use occasionally if I want a 10*8 print with an even border (you turn it over to the other side, for 10*8.)
Another use of the Durst Comask is to produce several small prints on one sheet of paper - for example to assess the result of using a different contrast filter. I have an RRB easel which is theoretically much more flexible, but one of the arms is bent and needs weights put on top to keep the border straight.

The bent arm can be a problem with the RRB easels. You could buy replacements, but I don’t know if that’s still the case. When working properly, they are very good, with borders between 1/4” and 2” all round in 1/4” increments. I’m sure I have seen a metric version as well, with 5mm steps.
