young photographers
Had a good day today, following a morning printing I went for a walk taking my Microcord with mre, and while heading back to my car I met some young Chinese ladies, they came up to me and wanted to know all about my camera, and were keen to show me their cameras, one had an old Werra rangefinder and the other a Pentax K1000, we were chatting for quite a while, they were travelling around Europe, and using these film cameras and B/W film, they said that they loved photography, especialy black and white, they started with Digital, but quickly grew bored with it and had for the past 4 years been using these old cameras, and they told me that a lot of young people from China were using film, it was a very storng growth hobby amongst young Chinese people, and lots were using old cameras, makes you think if amoung the young of China then maybe it will catch on here

Chinese Interest
With the quality that is coming from the peoples republic now, and the number of cameras made under licence, even pre-digital, I wonder if they will bring a rennaisance, or at least help it on the way.
Some time ago, actually quite a long time ago, when I was living in Germany, I bought a new 'Seagull' branded 35mm slr which was a pure copy of a Minolta- probably an SR1 or 3. The interchangeable lens with a Minolta bayonet lens was an F2/50mm with Chinese characters on the front of the lens. It had no meter, so I had to use a hand held one, but in fact it was very nice to use and the lens was very good. |

I remember the Seagull branded slr's, they were good quality and were good as a beginers camera to Learn on, IIRC Firstcall impornted them for a few years, It was certainly nice to talk to a couple of youngsters like this, they were very knowledgeable, and keen to learn more, for instance, I got out my Weston and spent a few minutes showing them how to use it,

I had a couple of the Seagull TLRs, and both were very poor. I do agree, however, that if film is achieving a resurgence in China, that can only be good for the rest of us. I was aware of a growing interest in the East a few years ago, as a result of a website my daughter had found. It's good to see that it has continued, and there's no doubt the Chinese have the ability to bring new products to the market.

It was called 'cool girls shoot film'
It is a blog, rather than a website. I had a quick look and it appears to have run out of steam. It's probably of more interest to a much younger audience, as opposed to most people here who have been using film for many years, or have returned to it following a break. I can't say if it's safe, but I haven't noticed any issue on the odd occasion I've looked at it. It was of more interest to my daughter who was in her late teens at the time she was viewing it. I would agree, the MPP Microcord is a great camera. The last time i had mine serviced a few years ago now, the technician that repaired it commented on how wonderful it was to work on a real camera, for a change.
I also remember the Seagull brand of cameras from China and remember selling a couple when i worked in a photographic shop in the mid 1970's. Although i must admit that having just spent three years working in China i do not remember ever seeing a local Chinese person using a Seagull, plenty of Canon and Nikon, but never a seagull; so i am not sure what became of the brand.
