Default MCC110 and selenium

Has anyone experienced discolouration of the paper base when selenium toning this paper. I would descibe it as a overall light straw colour. The prints were processed in Agfa ne, stop bath and two bath fix in Hypam followed by an hour in a Nova slot washer. The selenium toner is Fotospeed, perhaps a bit strong at 1+12. All chemicals were mixed freshly. My intention was to briefly selenium (60-90secs) followed after a thorough wash by partial weak sepia for the hilights. I can only think I had the selenium a tad to warm. This kind of stain has not happened previously with any other paper I have used with this routine and it is has been my established working method for sel/sepia toning for a number of years.

Sorry to hear of your problem

My only suggestion would be a Hypo Clearing Agent pre-toning bath.

Tim Rudman in his Toning Booking mentions light discolouration of the paper base if the paper is not sufficiently alkali prior to the Se bath

Thank you Martin. I'll try HCA and re read Tim's book. Strange it has only happened with MCC.

Not I. I do selenium tone it, in Kodak RST 1+19, typically for 3-4 minutes. Much longer and I get too much eggplant cast for my tastes. But I do wash aid and long soak before toning.

From what I read (or read between the lines) in Tims book - Toning is something of an unknown and almost everything seems to have an effect on the results.

HCA may not be the answer to your problem - but its an easy one to eliminate.

I don't actually use manufactured HCA but a Teaspoon full of Sodium Sulphite per 1L of water and then pour it away at the end of the Toning Session

Sodium Sulphite is the main active ingredient in HCA

I get mine from Silverprint and a small container lasts me well over a year

Good luck

Martin

Thank you again Martin. I have some Sodium Sulphite, I'll try that and various dilution and temps of selenium this weekend.

T tone MC110 in 1:19 KRST for a few minutes without any problems -certainly no change in base colour.
