Colour of Ilfosol 3 Developer
Could anyone advise on the colour of Ilfosol 3 Dev in its undiluted state. Mine looks the colour of Coca Cola (probably tastes like it as well) and wondered if it had gone past use?

Stone dead. Don't even waste the film trying it. Ilfosol should be clear, no darker than a pale straw colour.

Most liqued concentrate developers should be colourless or at most a pale straw colour, any darker and their dead, The only execption I know of is Rodinal,(Either RO9 one shot or Adonal, as they are now called) which keeps forever and goes darker with age but still works

When Ilfosol 3 came out, I gave it a try but found that it rapidly went off, even with Protectan. I remember thinking that it maybe had something to do with the "safety" cap on the bottle: perhaps it just wasn't as airtight as a simple screw top?

I recently kept a bottle of Ilfosol3 going for about 18 months of infrequent use by decanting into a beer bottle and using a vacuum wine bottle stopper in it. Worked fine even up until the end. Infact i just chucked the dregs away last week, 2 years after opening and it was only mid straw coloured. I think had I not done this it would have been fit for binning a long time ago.

Thanks to all who replied and your advice. Think I will mix a batch of Ilford ID11 which I bought to use in a deep tank but instead carried on with the Jobo.
Can anyone recommend a suitable 'one shot' dev that does keep a fair time? I dev about one film a week on average. |

Ilfotec HC, Kodak HC-110, Adonal all keep for years. Another option is Tetenal neofin blue which comes in vials: http://www.ag-photographic.co.uk/tet...blue-596-p.asp

As mentioned lots of time on the forums, if length of keeping time is your top priority, then Rodinal (or it's new name of RO9), would be my recommendation, as I'm in a similar position to you and find it an excellent developer, although of course you will find others who will same different... Do a quick search for it and make your own mind up is my suggestion.

Hi, there. I agree, everything darker than light yellow is at least suspicious, brown is definitely gone. A word of caution on HC-110, while I fully agree with it being long lasting I had a case when a dark leftover in a bottle of the lighter European concentrate was definitely dead. Needless to say I lost a roll...

I think DDX is supposed to keep quite well,or at least better than Ilfosol 3.
