Cheers Ian, I'm not particularily looking for a Nikon - as good as they are I'm sure - just a decent ~300mm lens for the 10x8.

I was loooking at the Schneider 300 f5.6, Martin - I know it's a lump but it would do me. I have plenty of bellows extension (120-800mm) on my camera so no worries there.
Cheers

I also have a Schneider 300 f5.6 that I've used with reasonable movements and had no problems, it's just the size and weight of the thing!

I've tried the 210 f9 and 240 f9 g-Clarons too, both well stopped down for landscapes but I as yet, I haven't been overly impressed with foreground and corner details. I'm sure they'd be more than adequate for 4x5 and 5x7 though.

Three things I learned with 8x10;
1. More bellows draw than you'd perhaps think for portrait work or anything reasonably close
2. 300mm sounds quite long but on 8x10 it's surprisingly wide-angle.
3. Interestingly, distortion appears less exaggerated than you'd expect.

I believe this was taken with the 300mm Nikkor as a reference photo while playing with some brass lenses. This is just to reflect lens perspective, taken at around 2/2.5 meters.

Thanks Martin, I did have a 240mm f5.6 Schneider which I found too wide for my liking hence the step up to 300.

As Alan pointed out above there is a Schneider 300 f5.6 Symmar-S at WYCameras but I've seen them sell for less without the Schneideritis!

There was a 300mm f5.6 Scneider Xenar, they were once being sold off new quite cheaply by Robert White here in the UK and Badger Graphics in the US. However the SH prices are much higher now than the new price.

You could look for a 300mm f5.6 Fujinon S, you can get them in mint condition for under £300 from Japan but the taxes will make it around £400.

With patience you'll find a 300mm for a decent price.
