Question How to clean a Nova print processor?

Yes, I bought a used one, four slots, with a heater. It was cheap, but it looks like... (expletive deleted)

The slots are quite narrow, that makes it more complicated. I heard there is a kind of cleaner from the manufacturer but I would have to order that, and I want to start using the processor tonight or tomorrow.

What would you use to clean such a machine?

I've used household bleach overnight and TC-1 with care, both with good results.

If you're in the UK, you can try the nova tar buster, which I never used.

What the others have said. The Nova Tarbuster is good but not essential. Diluted bleach which I have used will shift any stains if left in the slots for 24 hours.

A bottle brush with its short nylon bristles will get down to the bottom of the slot also scrub the sides.

Green thick household bleach diluted and left in the slots over-night or longer in bad circumstances.

I've bought a back-up trimate which has the heavy black tar in the slots.

Where has the tar come from, is from the chemicals for colour processing?

And will bleach also remove the black tar or would it be better to use the proper stuff?

It sounds to me the tank has been used for colour work if it is that bad. Most of them were used for colour at some point as colour work temperatures are critical and much higher than those required for mono work.

I cleaned my old colour work Nova up with diluted household green bleach without any problems at all. Every now and again I give it a further soak to get the stains off from mono work. Also dilute bleach is useful for keeping the Nova clips clean, trays and plastic spirals (soak over night).

Obviously Nova's Tar Buster product is specifically designed for the job so it may well act better than household bleach. Unfortunately I have not used Tar Buster but as you asked I do find diluted green Household bleach works OK for me and my two Novas.

Based on my experience the "tar" that the tarbuster refers to, could even be just ordinary B&W paper dev. My Ilford MG dev forms blackish looking "tar" deposits on top of the tank where waves have been created by paper agitation and the dev then dries on the dimples.

If the slots are drained down but not cleaned or dev is left to very slowly dry out over a matter of months( i.e. caused by sheer neglect and laziness) then the tar deposits will be stubborn but still can be removed by dilute bleach.

Colour chems may well prove to be worse but I haven't yet tried any in the Nova.

As I am german and shop clerks probably do not know what "household bleach" is, may I ask what that is? I tried to google that, but maybe some brand names might be similar in the UK and Germany...

That means:

Does "Cillit Bang", "Domestos" or "DanKlorix" work without destroying the processor?
